Primrose Residence Don Description

The main function of the Don is to act as an intermediary between the students and the Residence Management. Dons are expected to be advisors, educators and supporters to students. In addition to the specific job responsibilities listed below, the Don is expected to possess a positive attitude which embraces the policies and procedures of Residence life and lead by example acting in the best interests of both the hotel and the students to ensure a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

Qualification and Requirements:

Due to the demanding nature of the Don position and the time commitment involved all hired dons must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be available for an 8 month term (September - April) and enrolled in a local College or University program.
  • Must be available 3-4 nights per week including weekends for scheduled “on call” hours.
  • Expected to place the Don position as one of highest priorities, employment and extracurricular involvement
    outside of the position must have the approval from the Residence Life Management.
  • At least one year of residence living experience.
  • Must have completed at least one year of post-secondary education
  • Time Commitment- expected to arrive at least one week prior to Labour Day weekend and remain in residence
    through the last day of the occupancy term.

Responsibilities:

  1. Community Building and Peer relationships:
    • Become personally acquainted with each resident on his/her assigned floors and build a strong rapport that will promote open communication.
    • Implement and encourage the development of a community spirit by including social and recreational activities within the residence.
    • Assist new students in their adaption to residence life
    • Become a positive role model
    • Demonstrate availability and approachability
  2. Peer Assistance:
    • Develop the capacity to listen and understand to student’s needs and concerns.
    • Meet with residents who are experiencing problems (roommate conflicts, personal issues etc.)
    • Maintain familiarity with the college/ University campus resource centres (ie. Counselling services, Tutor Program/Educational development programs, Medical resources)
    • Develop trust and maintain confidentiality with peers.
  3. Code of Conduct Adherence:
    • To ensure that the code of conduct is adhered at all times.
    • Confront inappropriate behaviour.
    • Report Code of Conduct Violations to Residence Management.
    • Follow up with students who have violated the Code of Conduct.
  4. Administrative & Operational duties:
    • Assist with tasks related to daily operations; ie., key distribution, lockouts, room audit reports, maintenance requests and other items assigned by Residence Management.
    • Submit on call report
    • Maintaining Student Portal with up to date information. (ie. Floor plans, meal plan menu’s, Activities, meetings, surveys etc.)
    • Assist with online community building, ie. Facebook
    • Assist with the Meal plan operations.
    • Convey messages and announcements to students (i.e. quiet hours, fire drills, building repairs etc.)
    • Maintain floor cork boards with up to date information.
    • Manage and Assist the Social and Food Committee’s.
    • Conduct floor checks during on call hours to promote the safety and security of the residence community.
    • Follow through on all tasks delegated by Residence Management.
  5. Staff Dynamics
    • Participates in weekly Don meetings
    • Establishes effective working relationship and maintains open communication with fellow Dons and Residence Management.
    • Acts as a team player
    • Gives and receives constructive feedback regarding job performance

Compensation:

Resident Dons are generally hired for the academic year (8 month’s) and compensation is in the form of a room and meal plan waiver; however, subject to satisfactory performance. Individual evaluations will be completed on a monthly basis to determine remuneration.
